If you reach Rapallo from the sea, you will be deeply impressed by the vitality of its waterfront: it still evokes the historical relationship sea-town catalyzing the social living, economic and environmental and does not need new signs or icons. The master plan aim is to reveal the identity of Rapallo, revitalizing the relation sea-city through the natural extension of the existing beach with some new features that inhabit the sea: yachting services, beaches, bars, restaurants and a new auditorium. The master plan provides a new energy landscape that, using a technology on the market, is able to convert the kinetic energy of waves into clean, renewable electricity. In the installation the technology has been incorporated into a system of floating buoys that could serve as producer of energy, luminous landscape, water traffic control system and wave breaking system. On a larger scale the vision must also address the main problems of the city, including through traffic, the de-seasonal tourism, the connection between the historic city and the new post-war urbanization. The waterfront redevelopment of Rapallo needs for targeted and on time action, doesn’t have to upset the environmental and economic balance, and should guide the urban dynamics in the making and following successive stages supported by an effective strategy of urban marketing.
